Ananda supports bushfire relief and older persons’ mental health

In response to the current bushfire emergencies, over the next few months Ananda will support a number of initiatives to raise funds for CFS SA and also highlight mental well-being and the importance of exercise in older age. One key event will be Resilience Run on Sunday May 3rd.

Ananda Aged Care Resilience Run (for older persons’ mental health & CFS SA).

Resilience Run – the story

Initially this was going to be a new year’s resolutions run for older persons’ mental health in aged care, though the bushfire crisis changed approach slightly to assist the many staff and residents who wanted to contribute to the relief funds.  Both causes are linked and half the money will go to CFS SA and half to resident and staff chosen projects related to mental well-being at Ananda Aged Care, Adelaide, SA.  When you donate have your say!

We hope to raise $2000 before the start of the run so please help however you can.

What is Resilience Run?

Michael Page, Workforce Development Manager at Ananda, will run, walk and possibly crawl at least 42.2km (marathon) and possibly an ultramarathon depending on funds pledged, on Sunday May 3rd, between Ananda’s homes at Findon and Hope Valley via Linear Park.  Mental illness or mental health issues like anxiety, depression or as the result of social isolation take heaps of resilience to overcome, and resilience is a word synonymous with firees and bushfire affected Aussies who will all require shed loads to come through the current crisis.

What is the aim?

The aim is to involve staff and residents in activity to show the benefits of exercise on well-being at any age and to highlight mental health issues in older Australians.  Clearly it is important to raise as much money as possible money for the bushfire relief efforts in SA, not just immediately but for the longer term recovery.

Activity is vital to well-being for our residents

How can you help?

We are looking for corporate sponsors to pledge $250 each,  and for Kilometre adopters to donate $50 to ‘adopt a kilometre’ as an individual or a community.  Kilometres 1 and 42 are a premium $100!

Its not only about the money however and people can get involved anyway they can, pledging a few dollars to lose weight, run couch to 5km or anything that is fun! Some runners may want to join Michael on the day for part (or all?) of the run which will take in some lovely Linear Park sights but will be entirely self supporting on the route.

Michael will pledge $50 per kilogram weight lost between Jan 1 and the end of the run and will sponsor kilometre 27 (the classic start of the Wall in a marathon). Can we get to $2000 before the run?

We also invite staff, residents and families to send in positive stories of resilience which we will compile into an inspirational coffee table book.

You may well already be involved in other ways though please start thinking of fun ways to get involved and involve our staff and residents, and do give what you can to a cause we all know is so important.

Michael will run a 42.2k solo supported marathon

Affected by the issues in this story, or suspect someone else may be?

It is always best to tell someone, a friend, colleague or your GP if you are struggling with thoughts or feelings. Many people, especially older Aussies, find it difficult or may be don’t want to trouble others. It is important they are encouraged to find support now, and the contact details of some excellent people who do not judge include:

Lifeline – 13 11 14 www.lifeline.org.au

Beyond Blue – 1300 22 4636 www.beyondblue.org.au

Stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues are not a sign of weakness and many of the strongest people have overcome mental health issues, showing great resilience. The first step is to talk to someone.

Thank you!
